The Cobalt and Andrew Young present A-Z. A screen-printed alphabet project showcasing some of the downtown Eastside’s most vibrant emerging talent. 26 artists were selected to design/draw/photograph a letterform. The designs were screenprinted in editions of 10 by Ben Knight at Acme Studios. Prints are available at The Cobalt and Sharks and Hammers for $35.

Ensoe, Sueme and I are back from the mayhem at Miami's Art Basel, Primary Flight 2011. Sueme and I got down in the Graffuturism lot at the Kohn Compound in the Wynwood district. The curation was incredibly well-thought out and managed by Poesia from Graffuturism.com. Our filmer/best entourage component, Shawn Henderson, Dj Bikes returns this evening with an extensive amount of footage and photographs of the process as well as the entire experience. For now however you can check out some of the works the three of us were involved in. I'm missing a few photos from the whole complex still so i'll have to post those with the rest of the trip stuff. But those who were crushing out space at the spot were: West, Remi Rough, LX, Matt W. Day 4:The Kiss

Today I've been forcing some underpainting stuff for highlights in both figures. Look closely and you'll see that most of the highlights are either a straight white or a light tan pattern paper. Also in some of the darks I begin establishing them by using a few large strokes of dark gradiated colours. Once in, I work around them by using the next lightest tone to model the figure and focus on trying to maintain that same intial stroke with as little rework as possible. I haven't gotten the effect as well as I would like but as I continue this work I'm sure I'll become much more confident in this method.

Day 2/3 Canada Day: Rendering Ty

I focused entirely on rendering Ty on the second day, about 4hours. The colour-mixing was done either impasto or premixing on the palette, 50/50. I'm really wanting this area of the 36''x36'' panel to be excruciatingly tight.

Day 3, well it's Canada Day so I'm overcome with wanting to do other stuff so I painted the shirt and hand and now for a beer.

Day 1: Surface Prep

Started next piece in preparation for a group show hosted by 2R Art in their new gallery space in Soho, London called Rook & Raven, alongside Dale 'vn' Marshall, DAIN, Julien Spianti, James Dawe and Daniel Lumbini.

Prior to any oil rendering I generally spend anywhere from 4-8 hours preparing a surface for the work. This surface acts as separate composition that the painting can fall into whenever there isn't any real areas of interest as well as saturating any colours that are used in the rendering process.

In this first stage I'm solely focused on producing gradiated washes using colours and embelished colours that are prevalent in the reference imagery. The placement of the washes is somewhat relevant but I'm not solely focused on where they're place as long as smooth colour transitions are produced in this lay-flat-soak.

I've added a layer of drip using the same colour from the previous soak simply to add another layer of depth to the under-painting. This also softens any previous stroke edges.

Line drawing is transferred using white charcoal transfer sheet

A quick rummage through stacks of wallpaper, unique printed material, scrap-booking materials as well as giftwrap papers.

Paper laminating starts pretty erratically. I'll choose a larger facet to get down and possibly extend some of the proportions and extend contour lines. With the first few piece I LITERALLY do not know what's going on. Eventually I'm focused on producing colour and directional relationships with more paper that I add. I'm also trying to have the composition "stand-alone" before I start rendering.

In this case I've struggled with having the abstract forms stand confortably as if due to a large amount of black, dark blue and green all across the bottom section.

Final stage of the surface prep has been left to soak flat in order to soften some of the edges of the collage work.

Thus far the working title has been "BearClaw". It will fly to London (amoungst a number of other works) and be accompanied by a place female figurine with a bear's head and arm. It's intended to stand in front as a simple parallel of the painting. I'll be writing alot more about the project as I continue but I want to get some more work complete first.

Friday February 18th i'll be at Ayden Gallery doing some live-painting/finishing an install I've been working on for their anniversary show. The roster is huge and madly talented, if you're in Vancouver come down for 7-11, cash bar, artists in full attendance, live painting the whole deal + after-party. The show is coupled TOMS shoes who has donated 50 pairs of kicks for the selected artists to paint. I believe every pair of shoes sold an additional pair is donated. Should be pretty severe.

Customers was created in light of the “No Child Left Behind Policy”. Essentially the policy was put in place in 2002 by Bush to ensure that all students have a consistent level of learning in the classroom as well as structuring the curriculum in a way that allows fluid movement from grade to grade. My work focuses on how having been supplied a mediocre amount of information given by teachers pushes students into complacency and boredom. The piece also recognizes how a strong mind left unexercised will look for other avenues for stimulus.

An Invitation to New York City, the RE:FORM SCHOOL Project

Shortly after the Ayden gallery opening had taken place I had recieved an email inviting me to provide some work to an event in New York City. The invitation was to a gigantic event in lower Manhattan organized by Yosi Sergant. Yosi has previousely produced the Manifest projects, if you're unfamiliar with these projects consider taking a look at them, http://www.manifestequality.com & http://www.manifesthope.com. The iconic Obama was produced for the manifesthope project I believe. These projects have been a tremendous success for their causes and boast 10,000 plus attendees for only a few days and have included works by artists such as Barry McGee, Swoon, Tierney Gearon, Shepard Fairey, Claire Rojas, Sage Vaughn, Harvey Pekar, The Date Farmers, House Industries, Ron English, Chris Johanson, Robby Conal. This upcoming show takes place a number of weeks after the release of Davis Guggenheim's (director of "An Inconvienient Truth") "Waiting for Superman". A film that focuses on the poor state Americas public school system is in. The RE:FORM SCHOOL project is an artist collective gathered to raise awareness of this problem. The work is for donation also. Ironiocally the venue is in St.Patricks school, a school which just closed and was the largest catholic school in New York. The school will begin its transformation into a high profile gallery a month prior to the opening. What could be a better time to hold this show than after everyones eyes have opened just after the films release. The show goes from October 9th-11th. Both opening and closing nights will host parties and I believe there are workshops for under-privileged kids hosted by Barry McGee.

A very exciting opportunity which i'm flying out to be a part of and volunteer at.

The children are the customers, and they won't understand how much of a raw deaL they may have gotten until they've gotten to college or employment time, definitely too late
